pink baby! PINK!
It’s so easy to say “I’ll just do it tomorrow.”

Since I have been posting some processy stuff recently (or at least, un-finished pieces) I have been getting a lot of questions about my process. And while obviously in the past I have stated my unease about talking too much about my process, I figured it wouldn’t hurt to show some of the actual drawing steps I use while just sitting down and beginning a drawing.
This is something from a personal project I was working on a month or so ago that didn’t exactly pan out the way I wanted it to, but I thought it gave a pretty accurate depiction of how I start out drawing something. This was all done in Manga Studio (because I am lazy). But I would take the exact same steps if I were drawing on paper…it would just be a lot of pieces of paper that I draw over on my light box (things like shadow separations and tattoos would be done on the back of the actual final line drawing or on a new piece of paper entirely depending on the situation). I should also point out that this was not done for an animation, these are the actual layers I would use while doing an illustration.
I guess it should also be mentioned, that hands are fucking tricky to draw. I have probably drawn thousands of hands in my time, and even spent nearly an entire semester in college JUST drawing hands. There are basic drawing skills obviously that one needs like a general knowledge of human skeletal and muscle anatomy, as well a decent sense of depth and light. This hand is my own left hand that I initially drew from life by just holding up my hand in front of my face.

“If there was ever a time to dare, to make a difference, to embark on something worth doing, IT IS NOW. Not for any grand cause, necessarily… but for something that tugs at your heart, something that’s your inspiration, something that’s your dream.

You owe it to yourself to make your days here…

The DIY Stone Photo Holder

You never thought there could be anything cooler than a pet rock. But there is.

A pet rock that doubles as a photo holder! It’s a boutique-worthy photo display that’s super easy to make and costs less than 5 bucks.

In order to arrive at a personal style, you have to have a technique to begin with. In other words, when I say that style is a special case of technique, you have to have the technique — you have to have a place to make the choices from. If you don’t have a basis on which to make the choice, then you don’t have a style at all. You have a series of accidents.

THIS. To everyone who asks me how to improve quickly: this.

I think I’ve already posted a video version of this with Ira Glass’ voice over. But I’m posting this again because the advice bears repeating.
